"There's speculation that the central bank will cut interest rates next week," he said. Manila's central bank will hold a policy meeting on Oct 4.

Prakash Sakpal, an economist at ING, said the Philippine central bank has flagged the possibility of a rate cut following the Federal Reserve's move to cut its benchmark rate by a hefty 50 basis points last week.

"We see a 50-50 chance of a 25 basis point rate cut at next week's policy meeting of the central bank," he said.

Remo Philippine Daily Inquirer The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said 2013 could be a challenging year as far as preventing an even steeper appreciation of the peso was concerned, noting that a potential investment grade credit-rating for the country could drive more foreign portfolio investments.
